Audio Bitrate Explained: 128, 192, and 256 kbps

What bitrate controls
Bitrate describes how much data is used per second of audio. Higher bitrate usually means better sound and a larger file. Lower bitrate reduces size but can introduce artifacts, especially in music, ambience, or complex sound.
Good default settings
For spoken voice, 128 kbps is often enough. For general use, 192 kbps is a balanced choice. For music, important archives, or files you may edit later, 256 kbps is safer.
Why file size changes
A three-minute MP3 at 128 kbps is roughly half the size of the same audio at 256 kbps. The exact result varies because metadata and encoder behavior can add small differences.

Calculate an approximate file size
For a constant bitrate, estimated megabytes equal bitrate in kbps multiplied by duration in seconds, then divided by 8,000. A five-minute 192 kbps MP3 is about 7.2 MB; a five-minute 256 kbps MP3 is about 9.6 MB. Metadata adds a small amount, so treat the result as a planning estimate rather than an exact limit.
Match bitrate to the source
Encoding a low-quality recording at 256 kbps does not recreate missing detail. It only avoids adding as much new compression damage. Speech with limited background sound often works at 128 kbps, while music, ambience, and material with sharp transients deserve a careful comparison at 192 or 256 kbps.
Run a short listening test
If size matters, export a representative one-minute section at two settings. Listen on the device and headphones that will actually be used. Pay attention to cymbals, sibilant speech, reverberation, and busy passages, where compression artifacts are easiest to hear. Choose the smaller setting only when the difference is acceptable for the intended use.
